Three Years of Kaname Chiropractic: Growing Through Every Season

Three fall equinoxes ago, Kaname Chiropractic officially opened its doors.

The equinox marks a moment of balance between light and darkness. It also reminds us that balance is never fixed. We find it by responding to change, releasing what no longer serves us and making room for new growth.

That feels especially meaningful as we celebrate Kaname Chiropractic’s third anniversary on September 22.

A Practice Rooted in Community

From the beginning, Kaname was created to be more than a place people visit when something hurts. We envisioned a practice where patients could feel welcomed as their whole selves and receive care shaped by curiosity, connection and respect.

At our grand opening in Castro Valley, family members, friends, patients and neighbors gathered to help bring that vision to life. The photos from that day hold so much of what Kaname still means to us: people connecting, sharing joy and creating community around care.

Three years later, that community has grown. Kaname now serves patients in both Castro Valley and San Mateo, supported by a team committed to inclusive, culturally responsive and whole-person care.

Nine Years of Practice

This anniversary also marks Dr. Marisa Sum’s ninth year in chiropractic practice.

Those nine years have included many transitions, lessons and relationships. They have reinforced the belief that healing does not happen in isolation. It is supported by trust, attentive care and the communities that help us feel grounded.

Every patient who has shared their story, every colleague who has contributed their knowledge and every team member who has cared for the practice has helped shape Kaname into what it is today.

A New Chapter in Leadership

This year brings another important transition: Dr. Mari and Dr. Cassie Stansberry are now co-owners of Kaname Chiropractic.

Their partnership reflects a shared commitment to thoughtful care, community connection and a practice where patients of different backgrounds, identities and experiences feel seen. It also creates space for Kaname to grow with greater collaboration, shared leadership and a renewed vision for the future.

Growth is rarely a straight line. Like the changing seasons, it asks us to adapt while staying connected to what matters most.

For Kaname, that means continuing to listen. It means caring for the whole person rather than treating a body as a collection of symptoms. It means building relationships across our offices and within the wider Bay Area community.
